“During the first week of the Keep KLIMBing reading program and, for the first time ever, my son came home and on his own, pulled out a book and started reading.” - Keep KLIMBing Buddy Parent

WHAT IS KEEP KLIMBING

Keep KLIMBing is a cost effective, mentor-based literacy program geared toward reluctant readers ages 4-9 years old, and based on the following critical components of effective remediation:

  • Difficulty learning, and remembering the sounds to the letters in the alphabet

  • Lack of fluency in reading compared to peers

  • Reading errors with no connection to the sound of letters on the page (ie: saying "puppy" instead of the written word, "dog")

In 2nd & 3rd grade

  • Difficulty acquiring reading skills, slow and awkward reading

  • Confusing words that sound alike when speaking, such as saying, "lotion" for "ocean", or "pacific" for "specific"

  • Difficulty with rote memorization (Remembering dates, names, telephone numbers and random lists)

*Overall, has little or no desire to read.

AND, HAS STRENGTHS IN:

HOW IT WORKS

KLIMB’s experienced Educational Therapist trains our high school mentors on Structured Literacy lesson plans prior to the start of each program. When the program begins our high school mentors are paired one-to-one with a young KLIMBer to begin their tutelage.

All of our programs are rooted in confidence and growth mindset. We aim for our lessons to be effective (and fun), and for our KLIMBers to come away feeling empowered by their learning. We count on Keep KLIMBing's curriculum to improve literacy progress as well as instill confidence, motivation and resilience within each child.

Lastly, the cost of current reading intervention makes it impossible for a large majority of families to help their children. We feel strongly that the opportunity to read should be available to all children, therefore it is important to us to offer an effective alternative to this prohibitive financial burden on families.
